European Commission launched campaign about gender pay gap

The European Commission launched an information campaign in all EU countries about the gender pay gap. The gender pay gap is the average difference between men’s and women’s hourly earnings within the economy as a whole. Across Europe women earn on average around 18% less than men and in some countries the gender pay gap is widening. Find out more.

The Study on Volunteering in the EU available online

The aim of the study on Volunteering in the European Union was to help the Commission consider ways in which the voluntary sector could be further promoted at EU level and extent to which volunteering could help the EU in achieving its wider strategic objectives set out. The Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs exchange programme offers an excellent opportunity for new entrepreneurs to acquire relevant skills for managing a small or medium-sized enterprise (SME). The new entrepreneurs will learn how to manage an SME as well as getting familiar with the business environment in another EU country by working with an experienced entrepreneur. New entrepreneurs can choose to stay between 1 to 6 months with an experienced entrepreneur. During that period, they are expected to acquire relevant start-up and SME management knowledge in areas like financial and operational management, development of innovative products and services, successful sales and marketing practices, European commercial law and the single European market. UNITED, an European anti-racism movement, organizes the Action Week Against Racism from 13 to 21 March with the support of the European Commission and the Council of Europe. Activists, NGO’s, universities, schools and a wide variety of different organisations will carry out hundreds of activities all around Europe in order to make a change.

Celebrating 25 years of the European Capital of Culture

2010 marks the 25th anniversary of the European Capitals of culture. On 23 and 24 March the European Commission will be hosting a celebratory event to look back at the achievements of the past 25 years. Registration deadline: 2 March 2010. Latest figures on youth unemployment in Europe

The Statistical Office of European Commission (Eurostat) has released the latest data on unemployment in Europe. In December 2009, the youth unemployment rate (under-25s) was 21.0% in the euro area and 21.4% in the EU27. To compare with the data of December 2008: it was 17.0% and 16.9% respectively. The lowest rate was observed in the Netherlands (7.6%), and the highest rates in Spain (44.5%) and Latvia (43.8%)

Eurostat estimates that 23.012 million men and women in the EU27 were unemployed in December 2009. Compared with November, the number of persons unemployed increased by 163 000 in the EU27. Compared with December 2008, unemployment went up by 4.628 million. Further information: Eurostat Press Release.
