Logo Competition: European Institute for Gender Equality

Creative citizens of the EU Member States are invited the join this logo competition. The challenge is to create a logo for the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), the agency that supports EU Institutions and Member States in promoting gender equality, fighting discrimination based on sex and raising awareness about gender issues. The logo should reflect the theme of the Institute’s work and should have a name or title describing what inspired the author to design the logo. Submission deadline: 1 September 2010. Visit the EU virtual pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo

This year the European Union made its World Expo debut at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. The EU’s pavilion is based around the theme of ‘Intelligent Europe’, containing 4 parts respectively titled ‘Building Europe’, ‘Open Europe’, ‘Green Europe’ and ‘Living Europe’. On the web site EU @ Shanghai 2010 you can visit the EU virtual pavilion, play the game ‘Discovering Europe’ or read more about the European Union by topic.

The World Expo 2010 will be held from 1 May to 31 October 2010 and is expected to attract 70 million visitors.

Belgian EU-Presidency kicks off with 2 major events on youth work

Yesterday, on 1 July 2010, Belgium takes over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union from Spain for the next 6 months. The Belgian Presidency has prioritised the theme of youth work on the institutional agenda, with two related conferences. The European Youth Work Convention will take place from 7 to 10 July in Ghent, Belgium. Hundreds of youth work experts from 50 European countries will prepare a declaration on youth work, which will be presented at the European Council of Ministers for Youth in November. At the Conference on the history of youth work and youth policy that will take place from 5 to 7 July 2010 (also in Ghent) European policy makers, researchers and youth workers will draw lessons from the history and European diversity of youth work and youth policy.

2011 will be the EU-China Year of Youth

Last week the European Youth Forum and the All-China Youth Federation met in Shanghai on the occasion of the first EU-China Youth Leaders Summit. During the summit, that brought together 60 young people, they adopted a joint statement: Strongly welcoming the decision of EU and China leaders to celebrate the EU-China Year on Youth in 2011, as a historical recognition of the role of youth and youth organizations in promoting EU – China relation. The Year on Youth should aim to enhance the mutual understanding and friendship between the young people of EU and China and encourage young people to actively engage and support the development of EU-China relations.

Celebrate Europe Day next Sunday 9 May

Next sunday, 9 May, Europeans will be celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. On the 9th of May 1950, Robert Schuman presented his proposal on the creation of an organised Europe of peaceful relations. The “Schuman declaration”, is considered to be the beginning of the creation of what is now the European Union. Europe Day, the 9th May, has become a European symbol, which, along with the flag, the motto and the single currency, identifies the political entity of the European Union. Europe Day is the occasion for many original and innovating activities and festivities throughout Europe that bring Europe closer to its citizens and peoples of the Union closer to one another. 12 selected winners: design a new symbol for Europe

As you could read in an earlier post Design Den Haag organized a competition to design a new symbol for the European flag. Unfortunately the participation deadline has been expired already, so it’s no longer possible to participate in this competition. However it’s now possible to check out the 12 symbols (including a description) selected by the international jury. Denmark’s Little Mermaid started a journey to the World Expo in China

The famous Danish statue, known from the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale leaves Copenhagen harbor for the first time in nearly 100 years. Last Thursday Denmark’s Little Mermaid started a journey to the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, were she will be the centerpiece of the Danish Pavilion.

The European Union will make its World Expo debut at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo; a change in its usual policy of not participating in Expo’s outside the union. All 27 member states of the EU will participate in the Expo. The EU’s pavilion is based around the theme of ‘Intelligent Europe’, containing four parts respectively titled ‘Building Europe’, ‘Open Europe’, ‘Green Europe’ and ‘Living Europe’. The EU is the 231st participant in the Expo 2010, which has attracted 185 countries and 46 international organizations. The World Expo 2010 will be held from 1 May to 31 October 2010 and is expected to attract 70 million visitors.
